Cannabis Law: Growing in Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Health and the Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee have not released regulations related to growing medical marijuana in Mississippi. They have issued pros and cons regarding indoor and outdoor growing. They have also offered some benefits of using a seed-to-sale program.

The factors the Advisory Committee is considering regarding growing are price/cost, quality and climate.

Indoor growing
The Mississippi Department of Health lists several pros and cons.

Pros include:

  1. Control over the growing environment (e.g. light, water and temperature)
  2. Consistent quality of the product due to control of the growing environment
  3. Cannabis grown indoors typically yields a higher THC concentration.
  4. Extended growing “season”

Cons include:

  1. More expensive
  2. Pesticides are more often used
  3. Less energy efficient

Outdoor growing
The Mississippi Department of Health lists several pros and cons.

Pros include:

  1. Less expensive
  2. Cannabis grown outdoors typically has a lower THC concentration
  3. Outdoor growing is less likely to use pesticides.
  4. More energy efficient.

Cons include:

  1. The growing environment is subject to outside factors (sunlight, rain, temperature, etc.).
  2. Limited growing seasons
  3. Inconsistency due to lack of control over the environment
  4. Difficult to prevent access to the crop and a potential for diversion.

The Department also touched on the benefits of a seed-to-sale program, which gives marijuana businesses the ability to manage and report supply chain activities and the ability to track plan from seed to sale.
